BIOGRAPHY

Elva Lilias Brooks, age 70, passed into the presence of her Lord on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 3:54am, after a short struggle with cancer.  She was at her Canadian home in Port Colborne, Ontario and surrounded by her loving family.  Elva is survived by her husband Don Brooks; brother Graeme (Pam - deceased) Pirie, sister Marilyn (John) Lindsay; children Richard (Katherine) Brooks, Sarah (Matthew) Van Essen, Rachel (Leonard) VandenBerg; and 19 grandchildren. Predeceased by Parents Walter & Eunice Pirie, Father and Mother In-law William Nelson & Margaret Brooks, Brother & Sisters In-law,  Bill & Ruth Brooks, Elizabeth Brooks, & Pam Pirie and Granddaughter Elysha Brooks.

Elva was born on February 18, 1946,  in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand, the second child to her parents, Walter & Eunice Pirie.  On May 18th, 1953, at the age of 7, she realized her need for a Saviour and accepted the free gift of salvation that Jesus offers (John 3:16).  Elva grew up in New Zealand and it was there that she trained as a nurse and a midwife.

In 1972, she went to Chitokoloki Mission Hospital in Zambia as a nurse and there met Don Brooks. Don and Elva married on August 20th 1975 in Ontario, Canada and returned to Kabompo, Zambia to serve the Lord together. They lived on the local Secondary School compound where Don was teaching. Elva assisted as a nurse at the Kabompo Hospital until their son, Richard, was born.  She was a dedicated mother to many and always drew on her nursing skills to aid family and strangers alike. Richard was joined by sisters Sarah and Rachel and when the children were grown, Elva started teaching Religious Education at the Kabompo Secondary School. She continued to be very involved with this until 2015.  Elva also continued some nursing activities, visiting with people, teaching children to read and was a mother to many young people in both Zambia and across the world.
In November 2015, Don & Elva returned to Canada for what was to supposed to be a two year period. Within three weeks of returning, Elva had some pains in her side which doctors discovered was pancreatic cancer that had spread to the liver. She was given three to six months to live and chemo was attempted, but the toll on her heart and body was too severe.

The family was able to be together over the Christmas holidays and that time was used to discuss many pertinent details - Elva was always thinking about others.  Amazing doctors and nurses were attentive to her needs and all the family’s many questions. Elva took every opportunity to cuddle with or read to her grandkids, even when she was very weak, creating precious memories. She was a faithful wife, loving mother, dedicated teacher, hard worker and caring friend.

Elva was often quoting scripture or poetry, or sharing a song fitting to the situation, even during the time of her sickness. On the blog that was set up for prayer updates on Elva, she requested to have this poem and the Bible verse on the front.

Psalm 31:15 – My times are in thy hand

My times are in Thy hand;
My God, I wish them there;
My life, my friends, my soul I leave
Entirely to Thy care.

My times are in Thy hand;
Whatever they may be;
Pleasing or painful, dark or bright,
As best may seem to Thee.

My times are in Thy hand;
Why should I doubt or fear?
My Father’s hand will never cause
His child a needless tear.

My times are in Thy hand,
Jesus, the crucified!
Those hands my cruel sins had pierced
Are now my guard and guide.

My times are in Thy hand,
Jesus, my advocate:
Nor shall Thine hand be stretched in vain,
For me to supplicate.

My times are in Thy hand,
I’ll always trust in Thee;
And, after death, at Thy right hand
I shall forever be.

Present with Lord Poem

Here is another poem I found in my mother Elva Brooks' things. I thought it was very fitting to post now.

Elva is with Lord

Mother, Elva, went peacefully into the Lord’s presence at 3:55am EST, May 11, 2016

At 3:15am the night Nurse called us to say the time was near.
We (Dad(Don), Richard, Katherine & Rachel), sat around Mother’s bed, we sang “Face to Face with Christ my Saviour”
She opened her eyes when we sang.
Then we sang “Swing Wide the Gates” and once we finished it was just a few minutes then she took her last breath at 3:55am.

We then did Skype with my sister Sarah so she could also say goodbye, as well as Mother’s sister in New Zealand.

“Absent from the body, Present with the Lord.”
VISITATION AND FUNERAL: We will send out another e-mail within a few hours.

Here are the words to the two songs we sang.

SWING WIDE THE GATES

HEAVEN'S GATES I NOW CAN SEE
AS THEY OPEN WIDE FOR ME
SWING WIDE THE GATES (SWING WIDE THE GATES)
I'M COMING HOME (I'M COMING HOME)
ANGELS SING A WELCOME SONG
AND I KNOW IT WON'T BE LONG
SWING WIDE THE GATES (SWING WIDE THE GATES)
I'M COMING HOME(I'M COMING HOME)

CHORUS"

SWING WIDE THE GATES(SWING WIDE THE GATES)
I'M COMING HOME(I'M COMING HOME)
SWING WIDE THE GATES(SWING WIDE THE GATES)
I'M ONE OF HIS OWN(I'M ONE OF HIS OWN)
I'VE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT
I'VE KEPT THE FAITH
AMAZING GRACE HAS WON THE RACE
SWING WIDE THE GATES(SWING WIDE THE GATES)
I'M COMING HOME(I'M COMING HOME

WHEN I LAND ON HEAVEN'S SHORE
CARES OF LIFE WILL BE NO MORE
SWING WIDE THE GATES(SWING WIDE THE GATES)
I'M COMING HOME(I'M COMING HOME)
ALL IS JOY AND PEACE UP THERE
IN A LAND OF BEAUTY RARE
SWING WIDE THE GATES(SWING WIDE THE GATES)
I'M COMING HOME(I'M COMING HOME)

REPEAT CHORUS:

FACE TO FACE

Face to face with Christ, my Savior,

Face to face—what will it be,

When with rapture I behold Him,

Jesus Christ who died for me?

Refrain:
Face to face I shall behold Him,

Far beyond the starry sky;

Face to face in all His glory,

I shall see Him by and by!

Only faintly now I see Him,

With the darkened veil between,

But a blessed day is coming,

When His glory shall be seen.

What rejoicing in His presence,

When are banished grief and pain;

Death is swallowed up in vict’ry,

And the dark things shall be plain.

Face to face—oh, blissful moment!

Face to face—to see and know;

Face to face with my Redeemer,

Jesus Christ who loves me so.

May 10 - Poetry my Mother loved

Mum (Elva)  has been unresponsive for the last couple days. She is still breathing but hasn't opened eyes or moved or made any other noises. Her heart is racing at rate of 150, which it has been doing for the last couple days.

Rachel's husband and other 2 children are to arrive on Wednesday evening.

Your prayers are appreciated.

--Rachel VandenBerg

Mum has always loved poetry, I found these two in her file that I thought would be appropriate to share with you. I remember her quoting them to me in the past. I am not sure who wrote them, as far as I can see from the internet they seems to be author unknown.

This hand written verse is only part of the poem, I found the whole thing on the internet, so will post it here author unknown:

THEN SHALL I KNOW
My life is but a weaving Between my Lord and me. I cannot choose the colors He worketh steadily.
Oft times He weaveth sorrow, And I in foolish pride Forget He sees the upper And I, the underside.
Not till the loom is silent And the shuttles cease to fly Shall God unroll the canvas And explain the reason why.
The dark threads are as needful In the weaver's skillful hand As the threads of gold and silver In the pattern He has planned.

HE LEADETH ME
"In pastures green?"—Not always. Sometimes
He, who knoweth best, in kindness leadeth me
In weary ways, where heavy shadows be;
Out of the sunshine warm and soft and bright,
Out of the sunshine into darkest night;
I oft would faint with sorrow and affright,
Only for this—I know He holds my hand;
So whether led in green or desert land,
I trust, although I may not understand.
"And by still waters?"—No, not always so.
Ofttimes the heavy tempests round me blow,
And o'er my soul the waves and billows go.
But when the storm beats loudest, and I cry
Aloud for help, the Master standeth by,
And whispers to my soul, "Lo, it is I!"
Above the tempest wild I hear Him say,
"Beyond the darkness lies the perfect day;
In every path of thine I lead the way."
So, whether on the hill-tops high and fair
I dwell, or in the sunless valleys where
The shadows lie,—what matter? He is there;
And more than this:—where'er the pathway
Lead He gives to me no helpless broken reed,
But His own hand, sufficient for my need.
So where He leads me I can safely go;
And in the blest hereafter I shall know
Why, in His wisdom, He hath led me so.

The Care Mother is Recieving

For those who are asking, Elva (Mother) is at home, in a hospital bed. Mother is on morphine and her pain is being managed well.  She is receiving excellent nursing care from the nursing staff that come in twice a day and for a night shift, from 11pm to 7am. These nurses are available 24/7 to us, should we need them at other times.

Also Richard and especially Katherine have been excellent in nursing mother as they have had much experience in end of life situations, from dealing with their daughter Elysha a few years ago and Katherine's Mother. Mother has been appreciating their attentive care and expressed that.

--Rachel VandenBerg (youngest daughter)

May 5th update

On Wednesday the doctor said Elva (Mum) has less then a week to live. Her breathing is very deep, awake moments aren’t usually more that 30 seconds. However Thursday morning she had an big awake time of about half an hour, during which she expressed what her wishes are for the funeral (songs etc), this was a blessing. During this time she also said something like “You always wonder what the end would be like, but now I am not afraid.”

Richard (Son) and Katherine and family are with her now.

Sarah (daughter) is not able to come due to the her ICP high risk pregnancy complications. Please do pray for her, as it is really hard for her to not be able to be here to say goodbye or for the funeral either. Thankfully she was able to skype with Mum the other day.

Rachel (daughter) just flew on Thursday, May 5th in the afternoon with her youngest, her husband and other two children will follow by road in a few days.

May 3 update

Mum (Elva), continues to decline.
She has lost the use of one of her arms due to weakness.

She spends most of the day sleeping, due to pain meds and gravel. The wake times she has are short and often confused.

She tried to walk down the hallway in the house today, holding on to someones arm and had to stop half way as she was too exhausted.

She now sleeps in a hospital bed in her room which makes it easier for her and those caring for her. They have a nurse coming in at night to look after her so that my Dad (Don) can get some sleep.
